Nor’easter Floods Coastal New Jersey as East Coast Braces for More Disruption

A powerful nor’easter is disrupting parts of the U.S. East Coast, with flooding in coastal New Jersey, widespread travel cancellations and power outages reported as officials warn that dangerous conditions could continue through the weekend.

The storm has already pushed water onto roads and into some homes in communities including Surf City and Manasquan, according to reporting by The Associated Press published by NPR. Thousands of people were without power, while flights and ferry services serving parts of Massachusetts, New York and the islands were canceled or disrupted.

NOAA’s National Weather Service said the rapidly deepening storm was expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding along the I-95 corridor from the Mid-Atlantic through New England. The agency identified New Jersey, New York City and Long Island as areas where the strongest gusts and most serious coastal flooding were likely, particularly around daytime high tides.

New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency in counties expected to face the worst impacts, Reuters reported. Airlines including American, JetBlue and United waived eligible change fees for some Northeast travel, while Amtrak warned that service could be affected. Officials also advised residents in vulnerable areas to follow local alerts and prepare for possible flooding, outages and difficult driving conditions.

The storm is also affecting public events. Concerts were canceled, and baseball schedules in Boston and New York were adjusted because of the weather. The disruptions show how a coastal storm can affect transportation, utilities, entertainment and sports at the same time.

Residents should check current alerts from their local National Weather Service office, avoid flooded roads and keep essential supplies, medications and pet provisions available. Conditions can vary sharply by neighborhood, especially near shorelines, tidal rivers and bays.
